A STUDY TO ASSESS THE EFFECTIVENESS OF STRUCTURED TEACHING PROGRAMME ON KNOWLEDGEREGARDINGCATARACT AMONG PATIENTS UNDERGOING CATARACT SURGERY IN SELECTED HOSPITAL ATNAMAKKALDISTRICT,TAMILNADU
A cataract is an increased opacity of the lens of the eye that causes partial or total blindness. The word cataract derives from the Latin word “Cataracta” which is in turn derived from Greek word “Cataractes” which means “Waterfall” (break down, down rushing). Methods: The aim of the study is to assess the knowledge level after the structured teaching programme regarding cataract among patients undergoing cataract surgery in selected hospital,Namakkal.A sample of 40 patients undergoing cataract were selected based on convenient sampling technique. The objectives of the study were to assess the knowledge level before and after the structured teaching programme on patients undergoing cataract. The data were collected by using semi structured interview schedule and questionnaires. Results: The analysis revealed that, out of 40 patients ,29(72.5%) had inadequate knowledge level, 11(27.5%) had moderate knowledge level, none of them had adequate knowledge regarding cataract before structured teaching programme &29(72.5%) had adequate knowledge level, 11(27.5%) had moderate knowledge level, none of them had inadequate knowledge regarding cataract after the structured teaching programme. There was significant relationship between level of knowledge score and selected demographic variables of patients undergoing cataract surgery such as age, educational status, family members undergone cataract surgery. Conclusion: The findings of the study indicate that there is a lack of sufficient knowledge about cataract and the structured teaching programme found to be effective in improving the knowledge regarding cataract among patients undergoing cataract surgery.
