Abstract: Stress is a part of human life, and it has consequences for human life. In the regular way of living, no one can escape from stress, and this is true in the case of students as well. Stress is an individual’s incapacity to deal with or reaction to a particular situation when he or she perceives difficulty coping with the demands of the situation. As individuals are different from each other, so are the causes of stress and their reactions to stress. Some kind of positive stress is helpful in motivating people towards achieving their personal goals. But if it goes beyond the individual’s bearing capacity, it has a severe impact on physical and mental health. In the case of students, various studies show that assignments, examinations, communication gaps between students and faculty, relationships, careers, etc. create stress. In the case of learners in open and distance learning modes, learners generally continue their studies at a distant place, having very little chance to meet the counselor and peers during the brick-and-mortar counseling sessions. The spread of the coronavirus has affected students' routine academic activities, which have ceased, and there was uncertainty over exam dates, unanswered questions, the completion of syllabi, face-to-face interaction, etc. Learner support services could only be offered through online platforms in such a scenario. The main benefit of this system was the regularity of academic activities, which reduced students' stress levels. Flexible online counseling and other support services also gave students access to a variety of educational resources. The transition to online counseling was filled with difficulties, such as getting counselors enthusiastic about embracing new technology, educating and preparing them for it, etc. However, the online system has benefits of its own and the study provides certain recommendations in the direction of Open and Online education.
Keywords: Stress, online counselling, COVID- 19.
