Abstract: Lithium is a naturally occurring element in the Earth's crust and is also found in trace amounts within the human body. The exact amount of lithium present in the human body can vary, but it's generally estimated to be around 7 to 30 micrograms (µg) per liter of blood. This small amount is not enough to have a noticeable impact on the body's overall chemistry. Lithium carbonate is a compound that contains the element lithium, along with carbon and oxygen. It is commonly used as a medication to treat bipolar disorder and other mood disorders due to its mood-stabilizing effects. Lithium carbonate helps balance the levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, which can help manage the extreme mood swings associated with bipolar disorder. Lithium carbonate is usually prescribed in the form of oral tablets or capsules. The dosage is carefully determined by a healthcare professional based on the individual's specific needs and medical history. Regular blood tests are often conducted to monitor the levels of lithium in the bloodstream, as there is a narrow therapeutic range between an effective dose and a toxic dose. It's important for individuals taking lithium carbonate to be closely monitored by their healthcare provider and to follow the prescribed dosage and guidelines. As with any medication, lithium carbonate can have potential side effects, medication should not be started or stopped without medical supervision due to the potential for side effects and interactions with other medications.
