Abstract: Flow past a porous permeable cylinder and a solid cylinder has been studied using standard computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software (FLUENT) for a wide range of Reynolds numbers. This study incorporates the renowned Ergun equation, Forchheimer equation extending Darcy’s Law to analyze inertial effects in porous media, Karman Frequency to analyze the Strouhal number (St) (dimensionless number), shedding vortices past the porous as well as solid cylinder and the regular Navier-Stokes equations in the outer region of the porous permeable cylinder. The research examines several hydrodynamics characteristics, including pressure coefficient, wake structure, and streamlines, in relation to the impacts of the Darcy and Reynolds numbers. The vortex formation flow past the porous and solid cylinder at Reynold’s numbers (Re) of 2000, 3000 and 4000, capturing laminar, transitional, turbulent flow regimes shows a significant evolution in shedding characteristics. The pivotal contribution of this study lies in its exploration of the role and significance of porous media in shaping flow patterns and vortex shedding dynamics. The analysis of Strouhal number enables an essential groundwork for understanding the vortex shedding dynamics in porous media. This study offers valuable insights into the potential of fluid dynamic models of porous media.
