Satellite cities are smaller urban centres strategically situated near major metropolitan regions. As satellite cities rapidly expand, they encounter distinct challenges related to transportation, infrastructure, environment, socioeconomics, and identity. However, sustainable planning strategies focused on transit-oriented development, green buildings, waste management, affordable housing, and community engagement can enable satellite cities to grow in inequitable and eco-friendly ways. This paper examines the concept of satellite cities, analyzes key issues they face, and explores solutions centered on integrated planning, transportation, sustainability, and social inclusion. We argue with visionary leadership and regional coordination, emerging satellite cities can become thriving models for sustainable urban development worldwide. In this research, we focus on analyzing the concept, issues, and solutions for developing satellite cities sustainably. Satellite cities are smaller urban centres situated near major metropolitan hubs with which they share strong ties. As a form of managed decentralization, satellite cities hold promise, yet rapid expansion poses complex transportation, infrastructure, environmental, socioeconomic, and identity challenges if not properly planned. However, our analysis indicates that sustainable planning strategies centered on transit-oriented development, green buildings, waste management, affordable housing, and community participation can allow emerging satellite cities to grow in inequitable and eco-friendly ways. We examine definitions and characteristics of satellite cities, discuss major problems they face, and explore progressive solutions drawing on case studies and best practices. The paper argues that with visionary leadership and integrated regional planning, satellite cities can become thriving models for sustainable urban development worldwide. We aim to provide urban planners and policymakers with insights to help realize the potential of satellites as sustainable communities.
