This essay examines the significant obstacles to Haiti's economic development, primarily stemming from frequent natural disasters. Haiti heavily depends on textile and agricultural exports, but its vulnerability to earthquakes, tropical cyclones, and floods severely hinders progress. These disasters lead to substantial economic consequences, including fiscal policy challenges, inflation, unemployment, trade deficits, and slowed economic growth.
The essay emphasizes that Haiti's focus on short-term disaster relief diverts resources from vital long-term development objectives. In contrast, countries like Japan, despite earthquake vulnerability, have achieved development through earthquake-resistant infrastructure and education investments.
