Abstract: Yoga and meditation are increasingly recognised for their potential to positively influence the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and promote overall health and well-being. This abstract provides a synopsis of research examining the effects of yoga and meditation on the ANS, highlighting significant findings, mechanisms, and considerations for practice. Recent studies indicate that yoga and meditation practices can impact the balance of the autonomic nervous system, fostering relaxation and mitigating stress. Techniques such as pranayama (breathing exercises), mindfulness meditation, and specific yoga postures have demonstrated the ability to modulate ANS activity, resulting in enhancements in heart rate variability, blood pressure regulation, respiratory function, and digestive health. Additionally, these practices may facilitate neuroplasticity and aid in emotional regulation, thereby contributing to improved overall ANS function and resilience to stress. Despite the accumulating evidence supporting the benefits of yoga and meditation for the ANS, the precise mechanisms underlying these effects remain the subject of ongoing research. It is crucial to recognise that individual responses to these practices can vary significantly, influenced by factors such as the intensity of practice, level of experience, and pre-existing health conditions. Given the potential variability in individual responses, it is advisable for individuals to consult with a healthcare professional before embarking on a new yoga or meditation regimen, particularly if they have underlying health concerns or medical conditions. By doing so, individuals can ensure that their practice aligns with their specific needs and circumstances, maximising the potential benefits while minimising any potential risks. In summary, yoga and meditation offer promising avenues for positively impacting the autonomic nervous system and promoting overall health and well-being. Continued research in this area is essential for further elucidating the underlying mechanisms and optimising the application of these practices in clinical and therapeutic settings.
