Abstract: The main objective of the study was to assess the impact of VSLAs on the socio-economic status and welfare of participants in T/A chiwaula Mangochi. “Social Development is the promotion of a sustainable society that is worthy of human dignity by empowering marginalized groups, women and men, to undertake their own development, to improve their social and economic position and to acquire their rightful place in society.” - Bilance, 1997. The VSLAs model has been introduced to empower both men and women to have access to finance in areas suitable to them. Kumar (2009) states that self-help groups are formed across countries as an effective strategy for poverty alleviation, human development, and social empowerment. Therefore, this study sets out to examine the extent to which the informal savings associations/groups in the central region of Malawi–Lilongwe, TA Chimwala contribute to the socio-economic status and or welfare of households. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used in this study, Primary data was collected using questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with the member participants and other non-participants from within the study area of TA Chimwala Data was analyzed using content analysis and SPSS
